Fun in the Field: Tortuguero

Tortuguero:

Tortuguero National Park, Costa Rica

This year, a small team comprised of one postdoc, two graduate students, and an indispensible field assistant headed out to the marvelous and remote Tortuguero for some samples of the beach dwelling Costus woodsonii, among others. The Caribbean coast is not a bad place to spend a few days!

Walking up and down miles and miles of beach is hungry work. We ate lots of Caribbean cuisine, including the group favorite, Rice an’ Beans Caribbean style (not pictured as it always disappeared too quickly), which means spicy and with a hint of coconut!

We arrived on a sunny day in a crowded boat. When we returned, it was on a flooded river, and after a heart quickening incident involving running out of gas just a few hundred meters from the dock, we made it safely to land once again.
