Fun in the Field: La Selva

Our field sites are scattered throughout Costa Rica and Panama, and boy do we have fun come field season!

There are few things quite like a rainy day in the rainforest! We are all smiles here after the sky had cleared and we were no longer concerned about the torrential downpour stranding us across the river from warm beds and hot food!

Even on a rainless morning, the tropics are a wet place.  We record all our data on waterproof paper!

A peccary nosing around for snacks at the La Selva Biological Station. While the tropics are full of life, few of these critters are as cooperative models as the unabashed peccaries at La Selva.

Plants aren’t the only ones who love the tropics! Not a day in the field goes by without wildlife sightings. From howler monkeys to climbing anteaters to noisy birds to pecarries (pictured here), there is never a dull moment. Not to mention the myriad insects and more than a couple reptiles and amphibians!

In the afternoon, when La Selva is almost always rainy, it is time to process the days samples and get on top of the data entry. Here is the intrepid Dena Grossenbacher hard at work as always!
